कालसर्प दोष से मुक्ति नागपंचमी पर सांप की पूजा करने के धार्मिक कारणों के साथ-साथ ज्योतिषीय कारण भी हैं। कुंडली में योग के साथ-साथ दोभी होते हैं और इनमें कालसर्प दोष सबसे प्रमुख और अशुभ होता है। जब कुंडली में राहु और केतु के बीच में सारे ग्रह आ जाते हैं तो उसे कालसर्प दोष कहते हैं। यह 12 प्रकार का होता है। माना जाता है कि इस योग के रहने पर जातक को फल नहीं मिल पाता है। मान्यता है कि नागपंचमी के दिन पूजा करने से कालसर्पदोष से जातक को मुक्ति मिलती है।

नागपंचमी पर क्या करें और क्या नहीं मान्यता है नागों को पाताल लोक का स्वामी माना जाता है, इसलिए इस दिन भूमि की खुदाई नहीं करनी चाहिए। पूजा के लिए बाजार से नागदेव की तस्वीर या फिर मिट्टी या धातु से बनी प्रतिमा ला सकते हैं। दूध, धान, खील और दूब चढ़ावे के रूप मे अर्पित की जाती है। सपेरों से किसी नाग को खरीदकर उन्हें मुक्त भी कराया जाता है। जीवित सर्प को दूध पिलाकर भी नागदेवता को प्रसन्न किया जाता है।

Verse 1
On the day of Nag Panchami, wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes.

After this, make a snake idol from cow dung or sacred soil at the house entrance or puja place, take a vow for the fast, and invoke the Nag Devata.

Offer water, flowers, and sandalwood paste to the symbolic snakes. Also, offer sweets as prasad.

After this, offer kumkum, abeer, gulal, sandalwood, flowers, bilva leaves, turmeric, henna, etc., to the symbolic snakes.

When all planets come between Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope, it is called Kaalsarp Dosha. It is of 12 types. It is believed that if this yoga is present, the native does not get favorable results. It is believed that by worshipping on Nagpanchami day, one gets freedom from Kaalsarp Dosha.

What to do and what not to do on Nagpanchami. It is believed that Nagas are considered the lords of the netherworld (Paatal Lok), so digging the earth should not be done on this day. For worship, one can bring a picture of Nagdev or an idol made of clay or metal from the market. Milk, paddy, puffed rice, and durva grass are offered as oblations. Snakes are also bought from snake charmers and released. Nagdevata is also pleased by offering milk to live snakes.

Materials for worship. On Nagpanchami day, it is customary to worship Nag Devata with milk, curd, kusha grass, fragrance, panchamrit, paddy, puffed rice, cow dung, flowers, ghee, kheer, and fruits, etc. Brahmins are also fed on this day. In many places, white cowries are also kept in the puja. It is believed that by worshipping Nag Devata with proper rituals on this day, one gains financial benefits and never faces a shortage of wealth in life.
