Meaning & Translation

Verse 0
I bow to Vishnu, the Lord of all, who is ever peaceful, reclining on the great serpent (Shesha), from whose navel springs the lotus (Brahma), the Lord of the Devas, the support of the universe, pervasive like the sky, with a body of the color of clouds, whose form is auspicious. He is the consort of Lakshmi, with lotus-like eyes, approachable by yogis through meditation. I adore Vishnu, the remover of the fear of worldly existence, the one Lord of all worlds.
Verse 1
May Hari, who grants all desires, Hari, protect me in front, behind, and everywhere.
Verse 2
May Vishnu protect me above, and Govinda protect me in the East. May Madhava protect me in the South, and Padmanabha protect me in the West.
Verse 3
May Shridhara protect me in the North, and Prithvidhara in the Northeast. May Rama quickly protect me in the Southeast (Agni corner), and Hari, the wielder of the Chakra, in the Southwest (Nairutya corner).
Verse 4
In the Northwest (Vayu corner), may Vasudeva, beloved of the mace, protect me. And below, may Shravana (another name for Vishnu or referring to hearing His glory), Hari, who grants all desires, protect me everywhere.
Verse 5
May Vishnu protect me at night, and Vishnu protect me during the day. Even when being criticized or slandered, Hari, the bestower of desires, ensures one hears auspicious things.
Verse 6
This sacred Kavach, indeed spoken by Vishnu Himself, whoever recites it constantly with devotion, is freed from all sins.
Verse 7
He obtains all desires and the fulfillment of all wishes. Hari ensures one hears unprecedented good fortune and achievements.
Verse 8
Thus ends the Vishnu Kavach, from the glorious Brahmanda Purana.
