बहुत समय पहले की बात है, एक गांव में एक क्षत्रिय रहता था। एक दिन रास्ते में उसकी किसी बात पर एक ब्राह्मण से कहासुनी हो गई। बात बढ़ी और क्षत्रिय ने आवेश में आकर ब्राह्मण को धक्का दे दिया। दुर्भाग्यवश, ब्राह्मण गिरा और उसकी मृत्यु हो गई।

घटना के कुछ ही समय बाद क्षत्रिय को अपने किए पर पछतावा हुआ। उसने ब्राह्मण के अंतिम संस्कार की जिम्मेदारी ली और गांव के लोगों से क्षमा भी मांगी। लेकिन गांव के पंडितों ने साफ मना कर दिया। उन्होंने कहा, “तुम पर ब्रह्महत्या का दोष है। जब तक तुम इसका प्रायश्चित नहीं करते, हम कोई धार्मिक कार्य में शामिल नहीं होंगे।”

अब क्षत्रिय परेशान था। उसने बार-बार विनती की कि उसे कोई उपाय बताया जाए जिससे वह इस पाप से मुक्त हो सके। पंडितों ने उसे सलाह दी, “अगर तुम सच्चे मन से सावन के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी, यानी कामिका एकादशी का व्रत रखो, भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करो, ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराओ और दान दो तो तुम अपने अपराध से मुक्त हो सकते हो।”

क्षत्रिय ने बिना देर किए व्रत की तैयारी शुरू की। उसने पूरे नियमों के साथ उपवास रखा, भगवान विष्णु की पूजा की, तुलसी अर्पित की और रात भर जागरण किया। उसी रात, उसे स्वप्न में भगवान विष्णु के दर्शन हुए। उन्होंने मुस्कराकर कहा, "तुमने सच्चे मन से प्रायश्चित किया है। तुम्हारे पुण्य कर्मों और भक्ति से मैं प्रसन्न हूँ। अब तुम ब्रह्महत्या के पाप से मुक्त हो चुके हो।"

सुबह जब क्षत्रिय उठा, उसका मन शांत और हल्का था। गांव के लोग भी उसकी तपस्या से प्रभावित हुए और उसे फिर से स्वीकार कर लिया। कहा जाता है कि उसी दिन से कामिका एकादशी का व्रत विशेष पुण्यदायी माना जाने लगा। इस व्रत की कथा केवल सुनने भर से ही यज्ञ के बराबर पुण्य मिलता है और अगर सच्चे मन से किया जाए तो पाप भी धुल जाते हैं।

A long time ago, there lived a Kshatriya in a village. One day, on the way, he had an argument with a Brahmin over some matter. The argument escalated, and in a fit of rage, the Kshatriya pushed the Brahmin. Unfortunately, the Brahmin fell and died.
Verse 12
Soon after the incident, the Kshatriya regretted his actions. He took responsibility for the Brahmin's last rites and also sought forgiveness from the villagers. However, the village pundits flatly refused. They said, “You are guilty of Brahmahathya (killing a Brahmin). Until you atone for it, we will not participate in any religious activities.”

Now the Kshatriya was troubled. He repeatedly pleaded for a way to be freed from this sin. The pundits advised him, “If you sincerely observe the fast of Kamika Ekadashi, which falls on the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of Sawan month, worship Lord Vishnu, feed Brahmins, and give donations, you can be freed from your offense.”

Without delay, the Kshatriya began preparations for the fast. He observed the fast with all rules, worshipped Lord Vishnu, offered Tulsi, and kept vigil throughout the night. That very night, he had a vision of Lord Vishnu in his dream. Smiling, He said, "You have sincerely atoned. I am pleased with your virtuous deeds and devotion. You are now freed from the sin of Brahmahathya."

When the Kshatriya woke up in the morning, his mind was calm and light. The villagers were also impressed by his penance and accepted him again. It is said that from that day onwards, the Kamika Ekadashi fast began to be considered especially meritorious. Merely listening to the story of this fast bestows merit equal to a Yajna, and if observed with a sincere heart, sins are washed away.
